What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic Acid is one of the Alpha Hydroxy acids (fruit acids). Fruit acids are nontoxic naturally occurring substances, and are found in a variety of fruits, such as grapes, apples and sugar cane. Our AHA Compound contains other fruit acids including Citric, Malic, Lactic and Pyruvic Acids.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids, or AHAs, are also known as fruit acid or ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Alpha Hydroxy Acids are obtained from fruits such as lemons, grapes & apples, sugar cane & sour milk. Glycolic Acid is the most popular and commonly used form of Alpha Hydroxy Acid for skin care.
Our AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) compound is a thorough exfoliator, removing the outer layers of thickened or damaged skin leaving a smoother and healthier appearance. Glycolic Acid can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, increasing the rate of dead cell shedding, new skin cell production and collagen formation. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, such as Glycolic Acid, are one of the safest methods of exfoliation and increasing skin turnover. One such change is that the rate of the skin cell replacement is reduced, producing a thinner, more fragile skin. Skin is replaced every three weeks at age 20 but this increases to every nine weeks by age 50.
The use of Glycolic Acid will help to stimulate and speed cell turnover, thereby producing more vibrant and smoother looking skin. The top layer of skin will be thinned by the exfoliation of dead cells, but in the deeper layers of skin, new collagen and elastin will be stimulated and the skin will actually become thicker, tighter and more firm.

With prolonged use Glycolic Acid has been shown to improve skin's texture & bring out radiance, treat fine lines, wrinkles & lighten freckles. Glycolic Acid Treatments can refresh your skin's epidermis by encouraging the exfoliation and shedding of old, blemished or sun-damaged skin cells. Glycolic Acid actually loosens the glue-like substances that hold the surface epidermis skin cells to each other, therefore allowing the dead skin to peel off. The newly revealed skin underneath has a fresher, healthier look with a more even color and texture. Glycolic Acid Peels used long-term with regular skin care maintenance may also affect the deeper layers of the skin encouraging collagen and elastin regeneration. The Anti-Aging result is due to the regeneration of facial skin care cells, collagen and elastin, which makes fine lines less obvious.
The outermost layer of our skin (which we can feel & see) is called the epidermis. The epidermis is covered with lots of dead cells. These dead cells undergo a regeneration process whereby they flake off during bathing or washing & new more youthful looking cells from below the epidermis will surface. This is a basic process of glycolic acid peels in skin care maintenance.
However due to pollution, sun, air-conditioning, age & other environmental causes, the regeneration process slows down & causes an accumulation of dead cells. This makes the skin dry & dull requiring a proper skin care treatment.
Glycolic Acid can promote the skin's exfoliation and shedding of the dead cells & instigate the rejuvenation in order to make skin appear youthful, plump, smooth and radiant.
When used in the right skin care treatment form, Glycolic Acid can improve oily skin, prevent acne, pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, and reduce acne scars.
